Statement from Reclaim Healthcare WNC in Response to DHHS Findings at HCA’s Mission Hospital

(June 20, 2025)  –

Reclaim Healthcare WNC knows that, despite the recent finding of no deficiencies by the NC Department of Health and Human Services, the operating conditions at Mission Hospital continue to put patients at risk. While HCA might be able to comply with the minimum federal regulatory standards of care, Reclaim remains deeply concerned about the day-to-day operations at Mission under HCA’s management.

We are following up with DHHS to better understand how the 35 incidents they came to investigate, many of which we reported to them, did not rise to the level of censure.

While patients do sometimes receive excellent care at Mission thanks to the outstanding staff, we also know that providers continue to leave due to untenable working conditions, especially in the ER. As a result, the hospital continues to rely heavily on traveling nurses, which perpetuates a workplace that chases away doctors and nurses and is bad for patient safety.

Nurses and doctors at Mission continue to bravely speak out about the dangerously low staffing levels and unsafe conditions, while reports of substandard care continue to come into Reclaim on a weekly basis. We will continue to report incidents of substandard care to state and federal regulators and to shine a light on a hospital system that is still not reliably and consistently serving our community.

Defining the Problem

Since HCA purchased Mission Health in 2019, m
ore than 200 physicians and 600 nurses have left Mission Health.

Positions vacated.

Reduced from 6.1 FTE

There has been a reduction in the ratio of full-time staff per patient bed from 6.1 FTE to 3.7 FTE. The average in North Carolina is 5.1 FTE.

Mission Health has been repeatedly investigated by NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for concerns related to patient safety and quality of care.
